Ergonomic Computer wrist support
Computer Repairs, Computer Support
Scientists say the human body evolved and changed through the centuries when man learnt to do new things: we certainly have different body structures than our ancestors, the apes! Computers are a recent addition to the human lifestyle, and though it has become a vital part of every business and home, our body has not adapted yet to it. Working on the computer strains the neck, the eyes, and performing keying tasks on the computer increases the angle to which users' wrists are bent. Increasing the angle of bend, increases the stress and irritation on tendons and tendon sheaths due to constant contact. This is especially true with high repetition or prolonged keying tasks. Keying without a wrist rest can also increase contact stress between the user’s wrist and hard or sharp workstation components. Therefore an ergonomic computer wrist support has to be used to alleviate these problems while working with the computer.
Ergonomic computer wrist supports should be worn while typing, writing, and using the mouse, to provide support and reduce the pain caused by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other wrist and hand related repetitive motion injuries. There are various kinds of ergonomic computer wrist support available. Effective for people who work all day on the computer or for technicians and employees that use more than one computer and have to go from one mouse pad to another, these supports reduce wrist strain and corresponding discomfort. Users who are static on one computer and have pads for the keyboards and the mouse, can benefit from the ergonomic computer wrist support, so that the fingers do not have to stretch to unnatural angles while working. Pool players, seamstresses, piano players, assembly line workers, golfers, video gamers etc also use ergonomic computer wrist supports.
Resting the wrist/palm on a support while typing may inhibit motion of the wrist and could care has to be taken that using a support does not increase the strain. The wrists and palms should rest on an ergonomic computer wrist support which is coordinated with the body. This is achieved by matching the wrist support to the width, height, and slope of the front edge of the keyboard. Ergonomic computer wrist support achieves the goal of keeping the wrists as straight as possible and reducing the bending, and hence the strain. The hands should move freely and be elevated above the wrist, and not the other way around and the ergonomic computer wrist support ensures this. When not typing, the resting place of the hand should be the palm, or the heel on the hand, not the wrist, that should come in contact with the pad. This posture is not possible to remember, therefore it is strongly devised for heavy computer users to wear an Ergonomic computer wrist support whenever working.
While choosing an Ergonomic computer wrist support, one should remember to buy pad supports that are that are fairly soft and rounded to minimize pressure on the wrist. The support should be at least 1.5 inches (3.8 cms) to be effective. Even while wearing ergonomic computer wrist support the user can minimize pressure on the wrist by adjusting the other components of the computer so that a neutral posture is maintained.

I tried a gel pad type support for the mouse after my thumb and wrist became very sore. This helped a lot but did not completely resolve the pain. Next, I moved my mouse to a new tray that I built which is actually lower than my keyboard tray. This keeps me from being lazy and resting my hand and wrist on the surface in front of the mouse. This helped a lot. When I do need some support I use a Tiger Paw wrist support. These were originally designed for gymnasts but are used for many different purposes now. What makes them nice is that are adjustable for stiffness. They also come in lots of colors so they’re not too ugly!
