Upgrading Your Computer To Produce Videos
It's become easier over the last few years to create video on your computer. There are numerous programs that you can use, and it's become quite simple to where almost anyone can do it. But some of the limitations are your computer itself. What can you do to ensure that you can use your computer to create videos?
First, a good indicator of your ability to produce videos is the age of your computer. If your computer has been collecting dust in your den for the last 12 years, most likely you're not going to be able to upgrade it enough to be able to process videos.
Second, is one of the most important factors, the video card on your computer. If you don't have a powerful video card, you're going to have a much harder time processing your videos. Today's modern computers come complete with lots of very fast video memory, which makes producing your videos much quicker. Many cards come with as much as 512MB or more of video memory.
Third, is the system memory. Most computers come with a standard amount of memory from 1-4GB's. In the off chance that you have less than 1GB of memory, you're going to want to immediately add as much memory as you can to the system. Don't skimp however, you'll need to get the best memory you can afford. The quality of memory can definitely make a difference as well.
Fourth, is the speed of the computers processor. This is the main workhorse of every system. You'll have to have a pretty fast processor to handle all the intensive calculations involved in working with video. As long as you're working with a processor that has come out in the last 2-3 years, you should have enough power.
Fifth, it's important to have quite a bit of hard drive space. Videos take up a lot of room. You'll need to maintain a pretty large hard drive while working with all of these videos. Especially if you're going to be saving multiple versions of the same videos. It's not uncommon to eat up 100gb or more on a smaller project with video. With hard drive prices continually dropping, it's not very difficult to get a very large hard drive for a very reasonable price.
Now, I've roughly put the items you'll need in more or less the order of importance. I wouldn't worry about storage space if you have an onboard video card that shares up to 256mb of RAM.
A good computer, and all that it entails is essential to processing videos on your computer. When you have an efficient, well running machine, you're much more likely to be able to create videos quickly with less stress. By following the above guidelines, you're much more likely to have the computer that fits that bill.
