Issues with EISA Partitions on Dynamic Disks
EISA or Extended Industry Standard Architecture is a bus standard typically used for IBM compatible computers. It extends the AT bus architecture to 32 bits and thus allows more than CPUs to share the same bus. In Windows, sometimes when you convert a basic disk that contains an EISA partition to dynamic disk, you might experience some typical type of problems. To solve these issues, you might need to delete all the partitions of your physical disk and restore data thus lost from backup. Sometimes, backup fails to give required results or is found to be absent. To recover data in such situations, you need to use data recovery software that analyze the media and perform safe retrieval of lost data.
Consider that you use a basic disk that contains an EISA partition in Windows 2000. You upgrade the disk to dynamic disk. After this, you observe the following symptoms with the EISA partition:
- The EISA partition is displayed at an incorrect location
- You cannot manage the partition in LDM (Disk Management snap-in) in MMC (Microsoft Management Console)
- EISA partition usually resides as the first partition. But on dynamic disk, it is shifted to partition two with no drive letter associated.
- When you right-click the partition, you don't see Reformat, Delete or Explore command. You only see the Help command. Thus, you cannot delete or reformat the partition.
Cause
The EISA partition is not placed at correct location because of the way that LDM uses to handle it. Unlike basic disk, the LDM protects EISA partition from being damaged on dynamic disk. It doesn't the allow use of Windows 2000 Disk Management to delete the partition. Instead, you can use any OEM system EISA utility to recreate it.
Solution
To delete the EISA partition, you should use any of the following tools:
- diskpart command of Windows Recovery Console
- Windows 2000 Setup
- Third-party disk partitioning utility
To use Windows 2000 disk Management to delete it, you will need to remove all the existing partitions of the disk.
